Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched the ‘Har Gaon Mein Optical Fibre’ project in Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched nine infrastructure development projects, worth Rs 14,000 crores, for Bihar, through video conferencing on Monday. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 'Ghar Tak Fibre' Project under which all 45,945 villages of Bihar will be connected through optical fibre internet service.

The project will enable a digital revolution to reach the farthest corner of the state. This project will be executed by combined efforts of the Department of Telecom, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, and Common Service Centres(CSC).
The Project would also entail the implementation of 1 wi-fi and 5 free of cost connections to Government Institutions like Primary Schools, Anganwadi Centres, Aasha Workers, Jeevika Didi etc.
This project will lead digital services like e-Education, e-Agriculture, Tele-Medicine, Tele-law and other social security schemes to be easily available to all citizens of Bihar at the click of the button.
Here's what the prime minister said at the inaugural ceremony
Nine-projects have been inaugurated which include making six-lane highways, and three bridges on rivers. I congratulate the people of Bihar for getting these projects.
Today is not only useful for Bihar but for the several countries, today India is taking a big step to make its villages a basis of Atmanirbhar Bharat and I am happy that it is happy from Bihar.
Under this project in the next 1,000 days, one lakh villages in the country will be connected through optical fiber
I have full belief that with Nitish Ji's good governance, strong will the work will be completed fast in a rapidly developing Bihar.

What is the principle of OTDR?

An optical time-domain reflectometer is test equipment used to evaluate the loss of signal inside an optical fiber by transmitting laser pulses inside the fiber and measures the scattered light signal.

As we can see in the figure shown above the OTDR Machine contains a light source (mainly a laser) and a receiver along with a coupler or circulator. The coupler is connected with the fiber under test through a front panel connector.

The laser produces a short and intense light beam. These pulses are directed into the fiber link under test through a fiber optic coupler. A coupler splits the transmitted light pulse into two halves. Due to this, not all the transmitted pulse is directed inside the fiber.

However, despite using a coupler if we use a circulator then this wastage of transmitted signal can be avoided. As circulators are highly directional devices that direct the overall light signal into the fiber as well as sends the reflected or scattered light signal into the detector.

By inserting circulators in the operational unit of fiber optic tester, the dynamic range of the equipment can be improved. However, it also causes the overall cost of the system to increase considerably as the circulator is highly expensive in comparison to couplers.
